NURSE CONSULTANT
PHILOSOPHY
AND
PROFESSIONAL
VALUES

Figure 1
As long as I can remember my parents always taught me to treat others as you want to be treated. My personal and professional philosophy is an evolving and ever-changing dynamic work in progress. The two are always interconnected. I strive to view my patients as people and not their diagnosis. I believe in providing competent, compassionate and holistic care. These values and beliefs are accompanied by being empathetic, trustworthy, showing respect and compassion.
As a nurse I have the incredible opportunity to
engage with many families.
Every person and family is unique and diverse, each of us having our own ideals of what constitutes our own health lifestyle. With today's diverse families, we can encounter situations where it challenges our own morals, attitudes and beliefs. It is important for us as nurses to be aware of our own potential biases that may conflict with the patients and families we are supporting. In a perfect world we as a society would not show bias or preferential treatment to certain populations. The Canadian Nurses Association (2017) states that “it is important for all nurses to work toward adhering to the values in the Code at all times for persons regardless of attributes such as age, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or others”(p.4). We as nurses must reflect on our own values and beliefs in order to recognize biases we may hold in order not to be influenced by differences in our patient's values and beliefs which may differ from our own.
One's beliefs, ethnicity and sexual orientation should be respected
without judgement or discrimination.
I strive to provide safe and competent care while respecting their right to privacy and confidentiality. I will continue to educate, advocate and promote health and wellness, and will continue to be a leader to support change by enhancing strong family values. I believe that nursing is more than just a career, we are a voice for those that cannot speak, we are the legs for those that cannot walk, we are the eyes for those that cannot see, and we are the ears for those that cannot hear. Be the best that you can be for the people that rely on you to provide care and support.
